Plastic Surgery – Script (Exercise 7: Part B)
“What is plastic surgery? And is it any different from cosmetic surgery? Well, it’s basically a medical procedure with the purpose of alteration or restoring the form of the body. Though cosmetic surgery is the most well-known kind of plastic surgery, plastic surgery itself is not necessarily considered cosmetic. It comes in many different types like reconstructive surgery where the body restores its function and form. Craniofacial surgery acquire fixing any deformities of the head, skull, face, neck, and the jaw. Hand surgery deals with both surgical and non-surgical treatment of conditions and problems. Microsurgery anything that involves operating with a microscope. Last but not least, the treatment of burns.
Looking at its history, the adjective plastic
implies sculpting or reshaping, which is derived from the Greek,
“the art of modelling” of malleable flesh, and the surgical definition of “plastic”
first appeared in 1839. It all started in Egypt, where Treatments for
the plastic repair of a broken nose are first mentioned in the Edwin Smith Papyrus, which is a
transcription of an Ancient Egyptian medical text. Then, it got carried
out in India
by 800 BC, where Sushruta was a physician that made important contributions
to the field of plastic surgery in 6th century BC. By time, the transcription
was translated into Arabic, then The Arabic translations made their way
into Europe
via intermediaries. The Romans
also performed plastic cosmetic surgery, and they were able to perform simple
techniques, such as repairing damaged ears, from around the 1st century
BC.
Up until the techniques of anesthesia
became established, surgeries involving healthy tissues involved
great pain.
Not only infections from surgery was reduced by the introduction of
sterile techniques and disinfectants, but also the use of antibiotics
was another step in making elective
surgery possible.
Talking
about now, Women had almost 8.6 million cosmetic procedures, 92
% of the total. The number of cosmetic procedures for women increased over 164%
from 1997. The top five surgical procedures for women were: breast
augmentation/reduction, liposuction, abdominoplasty, and eyelid surgery. While men
had over 750,000 cosmetic procedures, 8% of the total, in which it
increased over 88% from 1997. The top five surgical procedures for men
were: liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid and ear surgery, and breast reduction to
treat enlarged male breast.
In 2014, nearly 16 million cosmetic procedures were
performed in the United States alone! While in Europe, the second
largest market for cosmetic procedures, invests a $2.2 billion business.
In Asia, cosmetic surgery has become more popular, and countries such as
China and India have become Asia's biggest cosmetic surgery markets.
UAE, on the other hand, showed a
recent article by CNN revealed that Dubai is quickly becoming the world’s
plastic surgery hub with more plastic surgeons per person than any other
country in the world.
To conclude, we all know that cosmetic surgery is a field with a
significant history that is now widespread and has many different
techniques to enhance appearance. And not only focusing on its negatives, but
also its positives and advantages on a whole another level could be life-changing.”
